Five Key Questions From The Da Vinci Code

In this article, we provide brief answers to these questions, and give you links to further information available from this site:

  1. Was Jesus’ divinity really invented in the 4th century?

  2. Was Jesus married?

  3. Is it true that the Bibles we have in our homes do not contain the earliest and most accurate information about Jesus?

  4. Was Jesus’ original message that men should encounter God through sexual rituals?

  5. Is Christianity nothing more than a copy of older mystery religious beliefs and practices?

Crash Goes The Da Vinci Code (Dr. Ron Rhodes)

Dr. Rhodes says, “Since Dan Brown’s novel, THE DA VINCI CODE, exploded on the scene, I have been asked numerous times by interested Christians to provide evidence against the claims in the book. I have therefore written this brief special report to provide an apologetic response to the more glaring errors in Brown’s book.”

Some of the topics he covers include: Did the God of the Bible have a female goddess companion? Does God’s name, YHWH, derive from the term “Jehovah”? Did Jesus intend Mary Magdalene to be the head of the church? Did the church propagate lies that devalued females and tipped the scales in favor of the masculine?

Is it True that Everything We Have Been Taught About Jesus is False? (Dr. John Ankerberg, Dr. John Weldon)

At heart, this statement in The Da Vinci Code is an attack on the Bible, since it is our primary source of information about Jesus. Is the Bible untrustworthy? Is the information in it false? Have “our fathers” been feeding us a lie all these 2,000 or so years?

What Makes the Bible Unique? (Dr. John Ankerberg, Dr. John Weldon)

This topic is vital because if there is solid evidence that the Bible is God’s Word to us, its critics are wrong. Worse, they are leading astray all those who listen to them. If the Bible alone is divine revelation, then by definition it is the most important Book in the world. It alone will tell us what God requires of us.

Is it True that Jesus’ Divinity was Invented by Constantine at the Council of Nicea? (Dr. John Ankerberg, Dr. John Weldon)

Many liberal theologians maintain that Jesus’ divinity, and the related doctrine of the trinity, were not part of the teachings of Jesus and the apostles, but merely invented by the church centuries later. But is this really what we find when we carefully examine the writings of the earliest Christian leaders, or is this allegation merely an invention by those who, for whatever reason, choose not to believe in the Trinity?

Just How Unique is Jesus When Compared to Other Religious Leaders? (Dr. John Ankerberg, Dr. John Weldon)

The average non-Christian, and even many Christians, have little understanding of how unique Jesus really is. In all the world and throughout all history, there has never been anyone like Him. There never can be. One only needs to read His words in the Gospel to plainly see this.

Is it True that Constantine Determined What Books Were Included in the Bible? (ATRI Staff Writer)

Is it true that Constantine produced the Bible as we know it today? We believe that even a quick glance at church history will show the fallacy of this statement.

The Canonicity of the Bible (Dr. Norman Geisler)

Canonicity refers to the normative or authoritative books inspired by God for inclusion in Holy Scripture. Canonicity is determined by God. It is not the antiquity, authenticity, or religious community that makes a book canonical or authoritative. A book is valuable because it is canonical, and not canonical because it is or was considered valuable. Its authority is established by God and merely discovered by God’s people.

Should Additional Gospels Have Been Included in our Bibles? (ATRI Staff Writer)

There is no question that the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls (1949ff) and the documents at Nag Hammadi (1945) were important in terms of biblical scholarship—but not for the reasons that Dan Brown posits in The Da Vinci Code.

What is The Gospel of Thomas? (Dr. Norman Geisler)

Some radical critics of the New Testament claim that the Gnostic Gospel of Thomas is equal or superior to the New Testament and that it does not support the resurrection of Christ. The so-called Jesus Seminar places the Gospel of Thomas in their otherwise severely truncated Bible. Both stances are serious challenges to the historic Christian faith.

Did the Church Recast Sex as a “Shameful Act”? (Dr. John Ankerberg, Dr. John Weldon)

[Hieros Gamos] (Greek: “sacred marriage”) Sexual relations of fertility deities enacted in myths and rituals,…” Is this God’s intended use for sex, or can it be something far better? What does the Bible say about sex?

Is Christmas Purely a Pagan Holiday? (ATRI Staff Writer)

What business does a Christian have celebrating Christmas, since the Bible gives no date for Christs birth? Isnt Christmas as we know it only an old pagan holiday? If so, why should we celebrate Christmas?

Did Christianity Arise Out of the Mystery Religions? (Dr. John Ankerberg and Dr. John Weldon)

In The Da Vinci Code professor of Religious Symbology Robert Langdon explains that  Christianity arose as a kind of “hybrid” religion: “The vestiges of pagan religion in Christian symbology are undeniable.” Is Christianity nothing more than a remix of old pagan religions, or is it something much more? The authors explore the history of Christianity to find an answer.

Was Jesus Married? Who Was Mary Magdalene? (ATRI Staff Writer)

Did Jesus have to be married? Is there any evidence of a marriage? Who is Mary Magdalene, the prime candidate to be “Mrs. Jesus”? How did she become known as a prostitute?
